Why Leading Organizations Use Our Digital Twins

Organizations, from small businesses to global enterprises, face real-world VUCCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Constraint, and Ambiguity) conditions in their supply chains. Yet, traditional tools, including well-known ERP systems, fail to consider all VUCCA conditions.

Ignoring VUCCA can have severe consequences — crippling production halts, spiraling costs from unexpected stockouts or excesses, and, most critically, eroding customer trust due to inconsistent deliveries and service.

And this is why we developed the Supply Chain Digital Twin. Not only does it allow for powerful simulations that fully consider all VUCCA conditions, but it also helps managers to:

1. Identify Performance Potential: Understand how much better your supply chain can perform.

2. Strategize for Optimal Outcomes: Determine the best ways to increase availability, reduce lead times, and boost cost efficiency.

3. Quantify Changes: Simulate and test the effects of changes in demand or supply and assess how to effectively mitigate or capitalize on these changes.

4. Compare Best Practices: Access and run scenario comparisons with different supply chain management methodologies such as Material Requirements Planning (MRP), LEAN, Theory of Constraints, and Demand-Driven MRP to discover which ones enhance operations and yield superior financial outcomes.

5.
Different Strategies for Different Sectors: Identify the best order fulfillment strategy and parameters for every product location.

SUCCESS STORIES

Results From Using Our Supply Chain Digital Twin

Challenge

Microsoft's CTO of Global Digital Supply Chains sought a holistic solution for the management of their expansive digital supply chains. The objective was clear: achieve a world-class supply chain capable of mitigating shortages and surpluses, all while enhancing responsiveness with minimal costs and inventory.

Solution

They reached out to us to help design, test, and implement a Theory of Constraints (TOC)-based end-to-end Supply Chain Management solution integrated with their SAP system. The core of our approach was a fully self-configurable supply chain simulation (the Supply Chain Digital Twin), offering Microsoft a low-risk method to validate the efficiency and effectiveness of the new TOC rules against their pre-existing SCM practices.

Outcomes

"The outcome has been nothing short of remarkable". Within a record timeframe of just 3.5 months, the comprehensive SCM solution was in full swing. By the end of the financial year:

  • Customer service levels enhanced by over 5%.
  • Reduction in inventory by a substantial quarter-billion dollars.
  • Achieved savings of over a hundred million dollars by curbing the need for product price reductions and managing overstock challenges effectively.

Challenge

Scholastic Book Publishing, a leading book distributor, faced a multifaceted challenge. Their expanding depot locations led to a complicated and costly distribution network. Added to this were rising real estate expenses, an aggressive driver market, and concerns about warehouse space utilization due to unpredictable future demand. When two consulting firms suggested the drop-and-hook method and 40-foot trailers, basing their solutions on averaged data, skepticism arose.

Solution

To provide a clearer picture, the company turned to us. Using our Supply Chain Digital Twin (SCDT), we simulated the entire supply chain's dynamics, addressing system complexities, constraints, and potential variabilities. Our model enabled the assessment of diverse configurations, giving Scholastic a risk-free tool to foresee the potential impacts of significant changes.

Outcomes

The simulation unveiled that the proposed drop-and-hook method wasn't as cost-effective as estimated. The initially projected $18M in Net Present Value (NPV) was likely to be a negative $5M.

However, our refined approach, backed by the insights from the SCDT model, identified a strategy that promised an NPV of $47M. This strategy was not just about the numbers. The model offered invaluable insights into driver requirements, vehicle needs, and routing intricacies, giving Scholastic a dynamic tool for ongoing strategic refinement.
